Canva AI 2.0 Launches as Agentic, Conversational Design Platform
Canva has announced Canva AI 2.0, framing it as the most significant platform overhaul since the company launched in 2013. Unveiled at the Canva Create event in Los Angeles, the update repositions Canva from a design tool into what the company calls a conversational, agentic platform — a single system for moving from idea to finished output without leaving the app.
Core Architecture Changes
Four new capabilities underpin the AI 2.0 layer:
Conversational Design replaces the blank page or template as the starting point. Users describe an idea in natural language or via dictation, and Canva AI generates a fully editable design with structure, branding, and layout applied. The system maintains context across a session, enabling iterative refinement rather than one-shot generation.
Agentic Orchestration coordinates Canva’s tool suite in the background based on a stated goal or brief. A prompt like “create a multi-channel campaign for our summer launch” triggers the system to generate all required assets across formats, ready for review or publishing.
Object-Based Intelligence allows targeted edits — swap an image, adjust a headline, change a font — without disrupting the rest of the design. Everything generated by Canva AI 2.0 remains fully layered and editable, as if built manually in the editor.
Living Memory gives the system persistent context across projects, learning brand preferences, style, and working patterns over time. Users can seed it with existing designs to build a custom memory library.
Workflow Features
Beyond design generation, AI 2.0 ships with several workflow-oriented additions:
- Connectors link Canva to Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, Zoom, and Google Calendar, letting the AI draw on live content to generate meeting summaries, sales pitches, or newsletters.
- Scheduling runs tasks on a set cadence in the background — weekly social content batches, translated into multiple languages, or morning briefing documents pulled from email and calendar.
- Web Research pulls structured information from the web directly into a design on demand or on a schedule.
- Brand Intelligence applies brand fonts, colors, and style automatically across every design, and can reformat existing work to a new brand spec in a single step.
- Canva Code 2.0 adds HTML importing, allowing externally generated code or AI-generated experiences to be edited visually inside Canva and published with SSO protection.
- Sheets AI generates structured, data-populated spreadsheets from a plain-language description.
- Template Remix lets users take anything from the template library as a starting point and reshape it through conversation.
Frontier AI Lab
Canva says its internal research team — over 100 people under the Canva Original Research and Exploration (CORE) banner — has sharply accelerated model development. First-generation models took over two years to build; new models are now being trained and deployed in as little as a month.
Proprietary models include Canva Proteus (style transfer, 2x faster and 23x cheaper than comparable alternatives), Canva Lucid Origin (image generation, 5x faster and 30x cheaper), and Canva I2V (image-to-video, 7x faster and 17x cheaper). The company is building its own training, reinforcement learning, and inference infrastructure to support delivery at scale to its 250 million monthly active users.
Andreessen Horowitz research cited in the announcement places Canva as the third most-used AI platform globally and the fastest-growing in customer AI spend among leading software companies.
Availability
Canva AI launched as a research preview on April 16, initially rolling out to the first one million users who discover it on the Canva homepage, with broader access expanding in the coming weeks.
