Most street photography advice assumes you’re standing close with a 35mm, waiting for someone to walk into a doorway of light. That’s one way to do it. The frame below is the other way: a short telephoto, wide open, shot down the length of a busy promenade at dusk, everyone moving, nobody posing, nobody aware. The long-lens approach solves some problems and creates others. Here’s what it gets right, and where it goes wrong.

Most people who want this look go shopping for a faster lens first. That is usually the wrong move. Aperture is involved, but it is the third thing that matters, and buying your way to f/1.

The seafront promenade is one of the few street environments that reliably delivers subjects moving in a predictable direction at a predictable pace. People walk the length of it, they walk slowly, and they walk away from you as often as toward you. That last part is usually treated as a wasted frame. It isn’t. A long lens does most of the work here. At 85mm or 100mm on a crop body you are effectively shooting at 135mm or 160mm, which stacks the promenade into a shallow ribbon and pulls the distant benches, café lights and background walkers into a soft wash directly behind the subject.

Some of the strongest portraits at a trade show or conference are never posed. They happen in the half-second when someone glances toward the light, or pauses mid-thought while the crowd blurs past behind them. Event portraiture is really about being ready for that moment rather than manufacturing it.
